Born in London, raised nr Bath, studied at Reading Univ. College, then Leipzig Univ., went to S.Africa in 1913 worked as a teacher, studies science (zoology), obtained an MSc from Univ.of Natal then PhD from UCT in 1922, became a conservationist, established the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve plus a writer of detective stories and textbooks.
